The ultimate cost was the destruction of an empire 5,000 years in the making, which could not cope with the 20th century. China is at times a confusing mix of ancient and modern. Incredible achievements, like the Great Wall, stand beside cable cars and temples built for godlike emperors cower under the shadow of cranes.
